Hi there,
Sorry for the lack of updating. We had written one one Monday in the hostel, but it obviously didnt work (sob). But we shall fill you in now.
Currently in the bus station in Sofia using free internet (yay), its become somewhat of a second home to us. We love the flies!
Missing Bucharest, it was so much fun. We speant the first full day going to various museums - museum of the Romanian peasant (complete country churches indoors, traditional clothing, pottery, a water mill (huge)) and and the outdoor village museum (a park of full-size village houses, barns and churches from all over Romania). They were great fun and was nice to learn a little about the heritage here. We then strolled over to the Herastrau park where we rented a paddle boat for a relaxing tour of the big lake.
Our second day included a guided tour of the palace of parliament, the second largest building in the world (square metres, 3rd biggestin cubic metres). It was amazingly lavish, marble everwhere, 2,000+ enormous crystal chandeliers, velvet curtains and an amazing balcony view of the main street and government buildings that resemble the Champs De Elyse! The security check (with metal detectors) was quite extensive. We then headed (unfortunately the long way around) to the National Museum of Contemporary Art which was brilliant. There were exhibitions depicting the struggle of the Romanian countryman, one entitled 'disobedience', a room full of old wedding photos from the past century (unusual weddings gowns and the frowns!) and the quite moving 'the fragility of being' which depicted the struggle of everyday life, marriage, sickness and work.
Bucharest was hot and stuffy, but we still loved it :) We kept drinking lots of water like good girls. Our hostel was lovely. It was up lots of stairs, but the air conditioning was so good that we got too cold! met lots of irish people there, there were about 8! The driving in Bucharest is crazy btw, we saw at least two accidents. This can be a precarious place, the overhhead electricity wires were all in tagles above! The people are so lovely though, and always asking if we needed help.
Missing Bucharest!!
and missing you all,
Love suzsin
