Jackman Travels
Yup, we went to Malaysia for lunch. Actually, no, we didn't even stay for lunch - we had a Pot Noodle-thing in the minibus on the way home. We went to Malaysia to get a stamp in our passport... and then immediately re-renter Thailand with a fresh 15-day permit to stay in the country.
It's totally legal, and totally ridiculous. We spent over twelve hours in a minibus and spent less than a minute outside Thailand.
We had to do this because on arrival in Thailand by air, they give British citizens a 30-day visa-free stay, and popping over the border and back gets you a further 15 days. We had asked people in Vietnam if it was possible to get a longer visa in advance - they said it wasn't but you could do it on arrival. They were wrong on both counts - it is possible but you can't do it on arrival. It is possible to extend a 30-day stay but that involves going to certain immigration offices (not any on our planned route) and it costs more than a visa run anyway.
This has all come about because we brought forward the start of our Thailand trip to spend more time chilling on the beaches. And that we have done very successfully, so no complaints about giving up one day in exchange.
And, hey, WE'VE BEEN TO MALAYSIA!
