Jackman Travels
Just a quick stopover in HK- our original itinerary had a simple change here but for our new dates we had to take an overnight stop.
We got a fantastic aerial tour of the city as we came in to land... and that was enough for us as, exhausted, we went to our airport hotel to sleep before our morning flight. We'd treated ourselves to a pretty nice hotel (Marriot Skycity- only complaint is no free Internet- come on guys...) and it paid off as we collapsed, ate room service and slept. One bonus with the hotel is that they have a shuttle running to and from the airport at all hours so that's one less thing to worry about. Oh, and the corridors and looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong - it felt like we were walking for hours to get to the room (hey, it had been a long flight, okay!) so ask for one near the lift.
We flew Christchurch-Sydney with Jetstar (fine, we were asleep for the whole thing) then Sydney-HK with Qantas. Last time we flew Qantas, they told us they couldn't upgrade us as you need to phone 24 hours in advance to ask; we tried that this time and were told they have a new policy to never upgrade people just because it's their honeymoon- they can't even offer us nice legroom seats as they now sell them at a premium. But here's the tip: ask for aisle and middle seats behind the emergency exit seats and- if nobody has paid to upgrade to them, you can bag them. Result. Perfect for relaxing and enjoying Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs- a film that turned out to be about 1000 times better than we had expected, really, really fun.
Oh, something we've been meaning to say for ages (okay, mainly Andrew's been meaning to say) is about the booze on these flights. Because we're used to flying Easyjet etc, neither of us had realised just how generous flight attendants can be! Ask for as much wine as you want during and after the meal, then if you fancy a whisky, stand by for absurdly generous measures. This is most marked in South America- Andrew had to ask one guy to stop pouring once he'd passed the two-thirds-full mark on one of those plastic cups. Crazy. However, it did teach the equation, 2 red wine + 1 large whisky = long sleep on flight.
