Jackman Travels
Thankfully the blockade we mentioned in our last blog was removed on the day we travelled from Copa to La Paz. This meant that it only took us 3 hours to get to the city (whilst it took Tina and Neil, our travelling buddies from Puno and Copa 7 hours and the 3 buses), we got to go through some wonderful landscapes (with amazing geological features for Suzie) and also experience the water taxis that take you across the narrowest part of Lake Titicaca (this is to prevent you having to go over the border to Peru again).
You go in a people boat, then all your possessions and bus get taken across on another one. The fact you aren't allowed to stay on the bus is telling and is a hairy thing to watch. We were more than thankful when our bus arrived safely one the other side of the bank - the picture will help explain more.
We booked to stay in the Milton Hotel on the recommendation of a friendly, aging 'hippy' (big long beard and hair etc.) traveller we meet in La Cupla. He warned us it was dated but in a good location. Well now, 'dated' was a kind description. Our room had 8 different types of wall paper on its walls, including a giant lake and tree-scape that covered most of one wall. And the bathroom smelt really, really badly of mould. We spent only one bad nights sleep there and moved first thing to the Majestic round the corner.
Well, La Paz...it's ok. It's very high up. It has some nice colonial buildings, the Pizzeria Italia does nice pasta and if you have a need for them, you can pick yourself up a few dried Llama foetuses too. What more could you wish for? A mountain bike trip down "The Death Road" perhaps? Well you can, but don't worry we didn't.
Off to Santiago next - bring on the red wine and meat again!
