My blog seems to have gone a bit funny since my first Melbourne entry so apologies if I'm repeating myself.
Arrived in Melbourne on Saturday after a 12 hour bus journey from Sydney. It was on a total whim that I came here, after I'd heard so many good things. Sunday I just had a bit of a wander around the city. It was incredibly busy due to a big charity run being on through the city centre. Kind of annoying if you weren't involved in it. I took a walk along the Yarra River and there were loads of people out rowing. I can see why people have said that Melbourne feels quite european, definitely more so than Sydney.
Monday I just chilled out really and booked up some stuff for next week so that I'm not without a roof over my head for easter weekend.
Tuesday I booked onto a tour of the Great Ocean Road, had to do it while I'm down this way. It was another early start and long day though. Our first stop should have been Bells Beach, the famous surf beach from Point Break, but unfortunately my arrival has coincided with the massive Rip Curl Pro Surf comp so couldn't get anywhere near. If I'd had more time it would have been ace just to go watch the comp, but anyway I didn't! We stopped on Anglesea for morning tea, definitely not as pretty as it's Welsh namesake. It was a bit chilly though, glad I came south now and not at the end of my trip a month later. The drive along the coast was impressive, lots of dramatic crashing surf and high cliffs. We stopped at the lighthouse from the aussie kids show Round the Twist, but it didn't look that familiar. Also learnt that they actually just export their dodgy tv progs without airing them on their own tv channels, cheeky aussies! In the afternoon we stopped at the 12 apostles, which are rock formations sticking out of the ocean. They are really impressive, I don't think you can appreciate it from a photo. I can't believe I didn't have them on my original itinerary. Also went to Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge (another rock formation!). On the way back we stopped for dinner at Colac, the town where Toadie and Stingray from Neighbours are supposed to be from!
Wednesday was Neighbours Tour day! 2 buses full of Brits doing the sights! We stopped at Erinsborough High for pictures, and then we got to meet the bloke that plays Ned, woo hoo! Finally a stop at Ramsay Street for more pictures. Feel really sorry for the people that live there, though allegedly they get $20 grand a year for the pleasure and their own security guard 24/7! It was a well cheesy tour but it had to be done, and I got Ned's autograph as part of the deal! If he ever decides to go to Hollywood I'm so selling it!
Got a 9 hour bus trip to Canberra tomorrow, another 6am start for me - so much for being on holiday! I've heard Canberra isn't that exciting but I'm only staying for 2 days to break the journey and could do with some chilling out without feeling like I'm missing something exciting. Then I'm off to Newcastle, wonder what the Aussie Toon is like, think I'll be able to get some Brown Ale??
