Day 18
Salzburg
We spent most of today in transit. Our first hurdle (after the steps/ bridges over canals with heavy bags), was getting on the correct form of transport, to get out of Venice. The ticket said Venezia S Lucia, as our departure point, but when I checked at the station they said it was a bus, not a train, that we were to take to Villach. We then had to drag our bags to the bus depot and find the people mover- shuttle train - that was to take us to the coach terminal. We just made it in time. We caught our breath and wondered what 'plan B' may have been, out of the 'Water City'!
So off we headed, on the bus (double decker coach of which we were up top), through the Italian countryside, north to Austria. This trip took in some spectacular scenery of the Alps and glacial valleys. The bus had to go through many tunnels, some of them more than 2kms long. We finally arrived at Villach where we had to catch a train to Salzburg. This was again a bit of a rush as the bus was late. But we made it, and found out seats. Two Austrian mountain cyclist men, were in our booth as well and one spoke reasonable English so we had some inside information into the trip. We passed many picturesque mountains and rivers and went through tunnels, one so long that cars have to go through on a train.
We finally made it to Salzburg and easily found our accomodation.
We decided to head down to Mozarts house as it is raining and cool. Renee is so happy we have finally got to see Mozarts home city. The house has a museum of artefacts and information about Mozarts life that is very interesting.
Dinner is next on the agenda and Phil finds a little cafe called Habakuks cafe and we have beef goulash, pizza and nice ice cream. More €'s...
To top off the night we walk across the bridge and find the other house of Mozart, his birthplace. Renee again is happy.
Tired and cold, we head home ready for bed and another Austrian adventure tomorrow.
