We'd all been thinking about and planning the trip to Zimbabwe for Grant & Lael's wedding...and the day finally arrived when we packed the trailer and headed for Beit Bridge border. The news about Zim at the time had been interesting to say the least, with a Cholera outbreak and riots in Harare, but it all went smoothly in the end. Crossing the border certainly was an education, to see the lorries and buses entering Zimbabwe loaded to the hilt.
The last time we were in Zimbabwe was 1996 and things have changed alot...it was really weird to see shops open, but with not much on the shelves, cabbages that cost $5m and the new $100m note! As I remember from last time, the people are still so gentle and friendly and always give a smile, despite the difficulties they must be experiencing.
After taking the wrong road at the start, we landed up a little off course (!) but eventually arrived at Troutbeck Inn, Nyanga where the wedding was to be held. Such a beautiful place.
The next few days were mainly about meeting everyone, playing golf, getting ready for the wedding etc. The wedding itself was fantastic, a beautiful day in a stunning little chapel overlooking the hills followed by a great reception with lots of dancing! A really great day!
Unfortunately, the weather didn't stay that good, and we experienced a couple of days of heavy rain, which meant log fires and relaxing indoors, with the odd attempt to play some golf inbetween the downpours! I must say, Steve felt quite at home in the cold and wet and kept an amazing log fire going.
So we left Zimbabwe in the rain, and headed towards to border at Mutare to enter Mozambique...to get some sun and sea.....
