We were not overly energetic this morning following our trip to the Bungles but we eventually pulled out of our camp and headed for Hall's Creek. Not a great deal to see there, had a quick look around then continued on towards Fitzroy Crossing. Spent that night at a free camp about 90ks east of Fitzroy Crossing, lovely spot with great views but very windy. Arrived in Fitzroy Crossing in time for morning tea and met two aboriginal artists, Russell & Malcolm, who were carving boab nuts. Bought one from them and had a good old yarn with them before moving along to find the old low level crossing - you guessed it, another icon...
That afternoon we went out to Geikie Gorge and took the tour of the Gorge, very interesting and informative. Stayed at caravan park in town for night and next morning, after finding local supermarket, made our way towards Tunnel Creek along pretty ordinary dirt road. On arriving at Tunnel Creek we discovered that six eggs in the fridge had broken and there was raw egg everywhere!!! Yuk, had to attempt to clean the fridge before we could do anything else!!
After finally having some lunch we made our way into the tunnel walk. The river runs through the limestone cave in two sections, about 300mtrs each in length. The walk required wading through the water in a few spots - no major issues here, it was actually quite refreshing and very unique. The caves had some interesting stalactites and there was some aboriginal rock art at the end. After completing the walk we continued on to our overnight camp at Windjana Gorge, a good spot with great scenery.
Next morning, after a peaceful night, we explored the gorge which is quite wide with the river running through and some deep pools which contained numbers of freshwater crocs, many of which were sunning themselves on the sandy banks...needless to say we kept our distance, even though everyone kept telling us that the 'freshies' were relatively harmless. It was the "relatively" that caused me some concern!!!!! Better to be safe than sorry.
We decided to continue on our journey rather than stay another night so we got on the road heading for Derby via the Gibb River Road. The road was dirt and pretty ordinary (to put it mildly) lots of large corrugations which were hard on vehicles and humans but we made it safely to Derby.
