Off Exploring
The pumice and obsidian quarries, on the north west corner of the island, were the main industry on Lipari.
Pumice is produced when the 'lava' from the volcano is hotter. It is followed by the eruption of obsidian as it cools down.
Obsidian is what made life here in Lipari successful for the Neolithic and Bronze age populations. It is sharper than flint.
It also was highly sought after and therefore gave them a valuable commoditty to be traded.
We found rocks of it on the beach and experimented with breaking it to form sharp , glossy Black, glassy shards.
