Kelowna
Kelowna is a very modern city beautifully set on the shores of Lake Okanagan.
Our B&B was an enormous log cabin in a suburb overlooking the lake and the city in the distance. It was Ralf's dream home. Not so much Michele's as she referred to her husband as "that idiot German".
We had made an error in not booking a winery tour - one where a minibus takes you to six or seven wineries and brings you back sozzled many hours later. However, it was Labour Day weekend and most of Canada was in town to celebrate and had long since booked up all of the winery tours.
We made up for missing the wine tour by buying an expensive bottle of wine on the recommendation of our waiter that evening. The winery was Laughing Stock and the wine was Portfollio. We took it back to the dark log cabin and drank it in the public lounge area hoping that no-one would join us. They didn't - it was delicious.
We had to make do with a cycle ride around the Kettle Railroad Mountain. Actually it wasn't too bad. A dead flat 24km trip that snaked around the high valley crossing 18 trestle bridges and through two tunnels. The views were tremendous. It was also very popular, lots of people of all shapes and sizes. After 3:30 hours in the saddle our legs were still ok but our bums were sore.
Back into the city, we went to City Park on the Lake where it turned out that the citizens of Kelowna were having a party to celebrate the holiday weekend. There were all sorts of water spots going on, lots of kids in the water. Pianos were left lying around for anyone to play if the wanted. The sun came out and it was really quite hot. There were food and ice cream stalls. Bars selling cold beer. Circus people were balancing on wires, It was fun. Kelowna is the sort of city we could easily live in.
Ralf had kindly booked us in for fine dining at the Cedar Creek winery. We sat on the patio enjoying the fine sunset, some very nice food and some fine wines to accompany each course.
In the morning Ralf was busy setting breakfast when we came down and when Michele appeared to make the main course she did so without a word to Ralf or a greeting to the guests. She produced a very nice pudding for our breakfast complete with skooshie cream and toffee. Then she flounced out again without a word to anyone.
