A long day of driving followed. Starting with breakfast at 5.30 before being on the road at 6. Many of us slept badly due to strong winds blowing all night meaning the morning was a quiet one all round with lots of sleeping in the truck.
Instead of sitting in her seat, Kirsty took one of the mattresses onto the truck and lay in the aisle on the floor dozing for a large part of the morning before we stopped for our first break. The next couple of hours passed quickly before we crossed the Luangwa Bridge and stopped at Luangwa town.
It was a simple town consisting of primitive huts lining the main road. And nothing much else. There were many people with stalls selling their weaving goods but we weren't interested enough to buy. Instead Kirsty and I bought a couple of doughballs from the townsfolk and also tried some of the plentiful local fruit on sale known as Moashi, tasting a little like a very sour apple.
After another break, as we sped through more of Zambia, Kirsty spent time sat up top in the cab with Piet (clearly I had done something to upset her!) until lunchtime when we had sandwiches by the side of the road. This time with a warning to the greedy selfish few not to take too much food.
Just before 4 we arrived into Zambia's capital, Lusaka. We stopped at a Western-style mall and were advised to get provisions for both Lusaka and our next stop, Livingstone.
The campsite, just outside of town, was located in a small gamepark and after pitching our tents we all went separately into the bush for a little walking safari being right up close to gazelles, waterbuck and three giraffes.
This leg of the tour was to end in Livingstone and so what would prove to be our last supper cooked by Vernon and Piet was a typical South African meat braai with lots of salad. We'll miss the two of them and their food!!
