After breakfast we all jumped into the waiting tuk-tuks and made our way to the local ferry port. It was a very calm ride compared to those we have taken in India! We were herded onto a ferry for a 2 minute crossing before getting off and into a waiting minibus to take us to a different ferry port. At this ferry port we were show to a very posh waiting area (with air-con, Wi-Fi and free drinks!) where we waited till we could board the ferry to Zanzibar. About an hour later we got on the ferry and I promptly fell asleep until we arrived!
It was a lovely hot day and we scorched in the sun as we waited for our passports to be stamped. While waiting here I saw the biggest spider I have ever seen perched in the tree - needless to say I didn't take my eyes off it until we moved along to ensure that it didn't eat me !
After another bus ride we finally got to our hotel in Stone Town. Neil and I were given a lovely suite being one of the two honeymooning couples - being married does have its advantages (sometimes!).
We were given a very long and extremely boring welcome talk by our local guide Salum. To be fair to him I think his English wasn't great so he wanted to make sure we had understood what he'd said, but it was simply really boring!
It was nice to get out of the hotel with some of the others and we headed for an Indian restaurant that Piet and Vernon had raved about. I can see why - the food was delicious! After lunch I had a wander around Stone Town with one of the girls in our group, Fabia. It was weird to be without Neil for a few hours. After being side by side for almost 6 months I really missed having him next to me.
Stone Town is a maze of old alleyways with lots of curio shops (souvenir shops) selling all sorts of weird and wonderful things. Lots of children and adults shouted out 'Jambo' (hello) as we walked around as well as the usual hawkers trying to sell us stuff. Fabia got some lovely trousers for 12 dollars very similar to the Indian ones I have. It made me kick myself for not buying more 2 dollar pairs while in India! As Neil keeps saying - he did tell me to buy loads at the time! We got totally lost but after asking a few locals for directions a few times we soon got back to the hotel. As Neil opened the door for me I was engulfed in a huge hug and told that he had been worried about me how sweet!
I had a quick shower and we went out to a roof top bar for a few sundowners with the others. The sunset was magical and we enjoyed chatting while having a few drinks. On the way out we somehow lost Barbara, everyone panicked, but it turned out she was down the road with some of the others - phew! We walked along to the local food market and here we tried some delicious spicy lobster and a Zanzibar pizza. This pizza isn't actually a pizza at all and is in fact more like a calzone but kind of square. Very hard to describe - have a look at the pictures. After filling our faces we went back to the hotel to enjoy sleeping in a bed.
I woke up from a lovely comfortable night's sleep, packed up and went for a disappointing breakfast before climbing in the bus with the group heading to North Beach.
Lots of love xxxx
