Blog 28

Not much for this blog, just a little update for you all. If the van doesn't sell in the next 24hrs then we'll be driving up to Airlie Beach, if it does (which we really hope it does) then we'll be catching a bus up to Cairns.
Work's been okay, the watermelons were really hard work, we had a quota to hit of 40 tonnes per day and after 3 days we had picked the last field clean. After that I moved onto pruning tomato plants, but the supervisor and I didn't really see eye to eye and she made sure I didn't earn more than $30 for the days work. After speaking with the hostel they put me onto picking capsicums (peppers to you and me), which can be a really good earner. On the first day I made $85 in 3 hours! The supervisors have put me onto bucket collection now which is paid hourly but still a good rate, and a little easier work too.
Laura started out on tomato picking which she said was pretty easy, only that was reflected in the wage. She just about covered the weeks rent with last week's wages. She was given Friday, Saturday and Sunday off but desperately needing money went out to the work buses at 4.50am on Saturday in the hope that someone wouldn't turn up. While I made $30 pruning tomato plants Laura made $28 picking grape tomatoes! No wonder the person she filled in for didn't turn up! She tried the same again the next day but unfortunately didn't get any work. She managed to get on to capsicums with me on Monday though and we've been doing ok out of it so far.
Meals have been interesting. Bundaberg is a city that seems to be run by backpackers, and thus it revolves around them. Everywhere we go there are special offers open exclusively to backpackers. Every Tuesday is "pizza night", when every pizza place in town sells large pizzas for $4.95, and a pub up the road sells really good $5 meals to backpackers, with every 6th meal on the house! Laura and I pick up a free one tonight.
Unfortunately no pics this week as we've been busy working and haven't had the time to visit anywhere. That should change before the next blog though.
Not much else to say, so I'll sign off hoping that all's well back home. Speak soon.
Love, James and Laura xxx
