Helen's Travels
after an exhausting week of what now appears to be ritual humiliations of the sri lankan students and us too, we decided to get out of colombo for the weekend and check out the 'cultural triangle'. this is basically a section in the middle of sri lanka cornered by anaradhapura, Kandy and Polonuria where there are loads of cultural things to see! in reality we only did a corner of the triangle, trying to avoid getting anywhere near the front lines of the fighting in the north. thinkin about it tho, we would probably have been safer up there than in the mini-bus we hired with some friends to get there! there are no rules to the road at all! most of the time, driving at full speed, there are three lanes of cars spread across a two land bumpy road- each vehicle trying to overtake eachother before being crushed by massive trucks speeding down the lanes in the opposite directions!
the 'culture' was a definate relief from the hospital, although i have now seen enough Budda statues to last a life time! paintings and sculptures lining caves hundreds of years old, depicted the type of torture that awaited naughty people- a bit gruesome and not very nice really!!
Back in colombo again (trying to avoid bombs) and the humillitation that awaits us at the hospital! we even found ourselves in the library today with textbooks trying to better our apparent non-existant knowledge of surgery (am sure the medical elective was never meant for actual medical work)
wish the rain would stop!
