Traveling Tips-
- In Delhi- Be prepared for the traffic! It is insane. Although something may only be 10 miles away, it could very well take you an hour or more to get there. Don't plan on doing more than one sightseeing thing a day, it's virtually impossible unless of course they're within walking distance.
- Don't drink the water! Order things without ice and try to avoid things like raw vegetables (probably washed in water) etc.
- You will get sick! It's inevitable, from water, dust, India itself - most likely you will be ill of some fate -cold, stomach, etc. Just be prepared and bring some medicine with you.
- If you take pictures of things or people, you will be expected to "tip." If you don't want to pay someone for doing something for you, make sure they stop doing it. Indians are the most persistent people I have ever met, they will hound you and hassle you til you give in. It's not worth it, trust me. Don't give money to beggars, where there's one there's twenty. They can spot suckers from a mile away and tourists of course have a huge target blaring at them.
- Don't believe everything you hear because you will here a different story from everyone. Example: one day we were at the mall looking for internet access. There was this kiosk type thing in the middle of the mall that looked like it had potential. We asked someone. They said that it was only to read the newspaper. We asked at the information counter where there was internet, she told us at the kiosk in the middle of the mall...hmmm. So we kept on our search and asked someone else who informed us there weren't any internet cafe's in the mall. Then we were told there was a place next to a furniture store...we went to the place next to the furniture store - it sold computers. We asked the computer sales people - they then informed us that there was no internet in India! Needless to say, we found no internet service that day. The scary thing is, these people really believe what they are saying!
- Going along with that story...people cannot be bothered to help out anyone else but themselves. It's all the survival instinct. If it doesn't benefit them, they will not help, no matter how simple the question. They definitely do not go out of their way to be friendly. Also in the mall, I was looking for a "kurti" (type of Indian shirt) So we were in this clothing store looking. I asked them and they had to bring some guy who spoke English so I could ask. He said, no they didn't sell them there. Then I was told they didn't sell any in that mall. Long story short, later we found out they did sell them there, in fact they had tons of them....crazy.
