Well almost a month into our travels we are now in the mountains about 6ooo feet. Its beautiful, cold, traffic free, and relaxing. This morning we walked up to meadow which had views on both sides of the himalayan range.
Still trying to catch up with where we last left off - I think the last blog ended with Jaipur. We travelled another 5 hours to a hill holy village called Pushka. The hotel was great, beautiful gardens and a swimming pool - and yes we did get in. The town is very tourist orientated with a lot tourists who once visited and still remain there! There are temples surrounding a lake which people bath in. We took a camel ride around the village which was really nice - though I kept slipping off my camel!
We decided to stay here for about three days but Saini through in an option of leaving the next day, travelling to Jaisalmeer., having a camel trek then making away to the punjab, visiting his village for a family memorial celebration then dropping us off in the mountains. - We opted for this but it did mean a lot of travelling!
Puskar to Jaisalmeer ended up being a 10 hour journey which in the end was a race to get to the Desert national park for the camel trek! We made it and it was definately worth the long drive. The camel I had this time was bigger and much more comfortable. The trek towards the dunes was beautiful and peaceful. It reminded me so much of Africa. We saw a beautiful sunset and to our benefit we were the last to be treked back to the camp so we did have the dunes to ourselves for a while - which is rare!
We had a pleasant meal back at the camp with entertainment by traditional dancers. Then it was time to head out back into the desert. There were probably 16 people camping out but what was really cool is that they split us into groups so that weren't camping out in a huge mass. Darren had hmm enough beer by this time and it made his day to getting on the camel carrier with 3 Norwegian girls who were already entertained by Darren within the first five minutes of meeting him. Well - because he sat facing the camel's backside who decided to fart!
Once we settled in the night was beautiful. I don't think I have seen a starry night like this since leaving Zimbabwe. What made even more special was that one of the girls had quite a lot of knowledge about stars so it made really interesting. Darren and I had our beds a bit away from the girls, it was rather romantic! We didn't want to shut our eyes, at one point there were shooting stars every few minutes! We saw sunrise and had breakfast back at the camp!
Jaisalmeer Fort is magnificent. it is one of the very few forts which are still lived in. It is sad though that outter walls are dampening and the fort is starting to sink. UNESCO are trying to repair some of the damage. We had our first and lassi from here (a sweet milk, yoghurt and butter drink) the one we had had nuts and raisins in yum yum!
The next day we travelled to the Punjab! Another 10 hours without a break! Well we did stop at this road side truckers shack cafe thing at which I refused to eat - but realised that we weren't going to stop again I forced myself to have a oily yucky greasy paratha - eeek! and had to put up with being constantly stared at!
Again it was a rush to get to Arimstar by 4pm so that we could make it to the Pakistan border! Will tell you about this after lunch, Darren has returned! After our walk to the meadows this morning with a Canadian couple and an English guy we met, Darren decided to carry on walking taking the room key and wallet with him - now I can go eat!!!
