Sept 7
We slept in big time not getting up til nearly midday. We sorted ourselves out and went back to Duncan's for breakfast before heading to the spy museum. We used the metro again which was super quick and easy.
I enjoyed the museum, Pete not so much. I grew up reading spy novels so reading about the genuine thing and seeing so many relics was great.
From there we checked out the Ford's theatre where Lincoln was shot then back to the metro. There was a three piece band playing really good soul by the metro entrance.
Back to the hotel and Pete had some work to do so I just kicked back a little.
We got a message from John Coppolano with his address for the tank visit tonight so that's all on :-)
We went to the grog shop and manage to buy a nice Aussie red from 19 crimes vineyard with something on the rear label re the convicts. Each bottle features a real life criminal. We tried to get some flowers for Johns wife but couldn't find any so just set off with the wine.
They are such a lovely family, we even got to meet his parents, sister and brother in law. The tanks are amazing, every reef keepers dream come true. Many of his fish are one of a kind hybrids and all as fat and happy as ours which is always great to see. His main tank is heavy SPS so of course we loved it.
We got the full tour and were there for two hours, we're so lucky! Pete took a lot of pics.
It took us an hour to get back to the hotel and we parked at the front entrance so Pete could go and get his tripod so he could take some night shots at the monuments. As seems to be the way we got a little delayed in the bar chatting to those still around. Chris expressed an interest in joining us so he had to go get his gear too. We finally set off a little after midnight. Finding a park proved problematic as most of the roads are no parking after one am. In the end Pete parked illegally near the Lincoln memorial and I stayed in the car ready to go around the block if necessary while the boys went to get their pics.
Next up it was the Air Force memorial. I'd seen it shut at 11pm and when we got there all that meant was it had bollards in place so there was no vehicular access so we parked across the driveway and again I was left to move the car if necessary. I got a couple of shots of the exterior of the monument and the flags.
Glad I saw all these monuments last time we were in DC!
Next up the Iwo Jima flag raising Marines Memorial. This time we found a proper park so I went with them for a wander.
By the time we were done there Pete was very weary so we headed back to the hotel and crashed out for the night.
