Rings around the world
Ok so i made the long ass journey from Bangkok over the border to Cambodia, another 18 hour bus ride, with the second half over the border the worst in the history of mankind.. 8 hours driving pretty much on a dirt track, couldnt read, or sleep it was that bumpy. However once there and settled in the town of siem Reap we were ok.
I met up with a couple of Irish lads (Rob and Anthony) on the bus who turned out to be quality. Just like us back home.. so have spent the last week doing Cambodia with them. Siem Reap didn't start off too well, as we were done out of a bit of cash exchanging money on the border but the lesson was learnt and we knew the currency well enough after that.
Anyway Cambodia is very very different to Thailand, very poor Kids begging on every street corner, Siem Reap in particular. We soon learned why once we heard the history of the country. I wont bore you with it but look into the Cambodian Civil war in the 70's, or the killing fields.. A dictator on par with Hitler known as (Pol Pot) killed 3 million of his own innocent countrymen, women, children the lot. Sick sh@t.. The majority of stuff to see in Cambodia are museums that cover the war an the people dead. It really was some very sad stuff to see.
Out of the depressing bit now, and we also spent a day at a place called Ankor Wat, which are a masive group of temples ressurected about 800 years ago.. in the same way as the pyramids you wonder how the f@ck they put it all together. Also we saw a floating village on the mekong river.. where people litterally live in a shack on the water, unbelievable! Pictures will be updated soon, some are already up.
I'd say what has made Cambodia the most interesting is the fact that the locall people have nothing, litterally nothing, and yet they are always walking around with a smile on their face and without a care in the world. A very humbling experience to be fair, as we all complain and moan about how sh@t our lives are back home, and i tell you we've got it so good. By far the best day was when the three of us spent all afternoon hungover sat with the locals, playing the guitar, and teaching the kids, playing board games with the kids, and just basically having a laugh with them. Amazing people.
As always we did get a few quality nights out.. Most notably on two separate occasions in two separate bars, we managed to turn them into Stone Roses tribute nights.. choruses of 'I am the ressurection' rang through Cambodia.. Awesome.. Night lifes not as mental as thailand, there aren't as many tourists round these parts, the bars are still quality though.
I left the lads early this morning and now i have hit Vietnam in full swing after another 8 hour bus journey (im gettin good at this). Im in a city called Saigon (Williams family joke there), and will be here for a few days. It reminds me of Bangkok for some reason but i havent really checked it out yet. Hitting the coast for some beach action in the next few days.
Right then, another ramble over sorry if you got bored, also sorry if i havent replied to any of your emails yet, i've had loads to get through so i will do it in the next few days.. Oh and i've added a few more pictures.. however my f@ckin camera broke yesterday so i can't put the rest on yet. Check out my sta travel site for em.
Love you and miss you all me.. x
