Awoke early this morning at Hotel Metropole. Great sleep! I wanted to get up early and get down to the waters edge to get some photos with the sun low in the sky. 7:00am the job is done, time for brekkie on the terrace.
Great spot the Hotel Metropole, sorry I wasn't staying a little longer.... maybe next time with Susie.
Next assignment was to whip around to Portofino and take a few pics. This joint must be one of the most photographed/painted places on the planet!
As striking as it is, Portofino is a pig to reach. A really narrow road along the water's edge. Barely room for 1 car let alone 2 way traffic.
On the way back a bus and truck collided and both drivers out gesticulating. Typical Italians. After they calmed down and got back in their vehicles we then had some chance of clearing the blockage.
Checked out and hit the road for 370km trip to Bormio up in the Dolomites.
Last 90kms was really slow on a narrow road along the Valtellina valley. On the western slopes of the mountain ridge there are terraced vineyards for 30kms.
Finally reached Bormio at 16:30
Nice town, great hotel the Eden Park. Fantastic car park underneath.
Next step was a walk around this old town to really get a feel for the place. Quite a lot of foot traffic around the old part of the town. Don't know the history of Bormio but some of the free stone buildings look to be 300 years plus.
I found a number of really interesting large wooden doors on some of the oldest buildings, so photographing "old doors" as well as other items of interest kept me busy until dinner time.
I dined at the Hotel restaurant given the menu looked interesting. Inhad read a number of mixed reviews about the restaurant, however I thought the food was exceptional. The service was not exactly at the same standard. Only 1 waitress that was covering everything on her own. Far too much.
Anyway superb food all the same..
Hopefully tomorrow I can get a crack at the Stelvio Pass.
