Stu & Amy See The World!
Monday 23rd January
We are awake early sorting out the train tickets to get us south from Nakom Pathom to Tung Song on our ever southward journey now. These tickets for a second class sleeper cost 14 dorrar each.
We get to the bus station and have just missed our bus to Sukhothai. Not to worry there is another in an hour and a bit, more than enough time for the wife to beat me twice at backgammon. Stu is thus in a great mood for the 5 ½ hour bus journey.
On the way Amy wins at scrabble (by 40pts).
Like old pros the bus journey passes quite quickly and lunch is some strange pastry stuffed with chicken and sweetcorn followed by Pringles (healthy or what?)
The scenery on the way is nothing special, Stu would have seen more if he didn't take about 20 minutes deciding over each word at scrabble.
Ominously it's getting warmer as we travel further south. We check into our digs (11 dorrar a night with real working shower) which is a little bungalow infested with mozzies. A swift chemical attack later and the room is mostly cleared. We sit out on the balcony and Amy wins at scrabble again. Lambs to the slaughter comes to mind.
We head to the only bar in town for some food and a few beers (weary travellers that we are? - ok alcoholics)
The bar itself is pretty good but it's the singing that really catches (I mean scratches) our ear drums. Whilst the singer is great at playing the guitar and the mouth organ (when obviously not singing, dummy) it's another one of those Thai-people-trying-to sing-English episodes which has us in stitches.
The artiste of choice tonight appears to be John Denver. I used to like his songs in fact, until very recently....
Highlights of the night included "west veeeerrrgiiiinnnnnnnneeeeeeeeee" pregnant pause "aaaaaa" and "take me home little cuntrweee roast"
Can't remember what we had for dinner as we were trying to stifle several laughs.
Bed.
Tuesday 24th January
For a change we decide to look around some old temples in Sukhothai old town. One wonders why we ever went to Angkor Wat if we are going to see every other Wat ever built.
Anyway, after breakfast we arrive at the historical park and it's turning out to be a pretty warm day already. We decide to hire bikes to get around the park and for some unknown reason Stu chooses the bike with the least padding on the seat (cause there's not much padding on me arse right!).
After riding around for a few hours, Stu thinks he can feel the frame of the bike beginning to chafe his nether regions. We decide to stop for lunch.
The Thai food is equally as good as the Vietnamese, if not better. So for some stupid reason Stu decides to have chicken burger and chips whilst Aims goes for the sensible option and has Pad Thai.
In the afternoon we decide to cycle another 10km to the furthest away Wats which to be quite honest are not all that different from the ones we saw in the morning. It's now pretty hot and lets just say rather uncomfortable for Mr Norman.
We get back to the hotel and shower and change ready for the overnight bus to Bangkok (BK) where we'll get the first bus to Kanchanburi (site of the death railway and the bridge over the river Kwai).
We head back to the comedy bar where the singer is stuck in a time warp still trying to pronounce various states of the US in a country and western style. We meet a nice English bloke who has taken a gap year between boarding school and University. He looks way to young to be on his own and insists on telling us that he is an atheist.
We board the bus to BK at 10.30pm which is probably the nicest bus we have ever been on. We still get very little sleep on our way though. Still that's for another day.
All the best to everyone and please keep the messages coming.
Lots of Love
Stu & Amy.
