It's now time to blitz the recruitment agencies which is quite a lengthy process as it takes about 2 hrs per agency well it's got to be done.
There's a lot of confusion whether the guys can actually apply for electrician roles here as we've heard they need to have their qualifications transferred in order to work as Sparkies and also it's supposed to cost a fortune, not great news. Anyhoo there's an Electrical Board of Workers here in Wellington so we've decided to go down there and see who can talk to them about it and let them know the situation and possibilities available.
We jump in the lift and the chap in there asks who we're here to see and the reply is basically "anyone who can talk to us about blah blah.." As luck would have it we are in the same lift as the top dog of the company and he says he will get the Electrical registrar Manager down to talk with us, bonus!!
The guys have a good chat with the Registrar and it turns out that it isn't as costly and back to college as the horror stories we'd been told. There is such thing as a provisional license which is granted if they have a supervisor who will in effect sign the work off that they complete, in order to get that the guys need to have work but to get work all maintenance companies are asking for licensed sparkies just getting companies to consider you is tough at the mo. "So what happens if you can't get the provisional because you can't get a look in first??
They have to apply for an unrestricted provisional license (which lasts for a year) in order to get this they have to complete a statutory Declaration of all the qualifications they have, jobs they've worked and go into great detail about their responsibilities in such roles. Once this is all written down they have to swear on the bible and that's stage one, stage two is getting a reference from Millers to say who they are and what their job role was, stage three is the 4hr health and safety course and the final stage is to appear in front of the board and present themselves for questioning in order to be given the license. Only 3 unrestricted licenses have been issued by the board in the past 4 years, ok well fingers crossed anyway!!
The board meeting isn't due until the end of this month but all the paperwork has to be in by the 13th so it's full steam ahead to get everything together. With the declaration complete, the health and safety course booked, reference requested everything else is up to fate… who so happens to be looking out for the guys right now as we got an update that Jon Sickles the Registrar Manager is on the board and as he'd already spoken with them (which never happens apparently, thank you Mr Top Dog from the lift) he is going to take their applications to the board himself so they don't need to appear, thank you, thank you, thank you!!
