On our second day in Cave City, KY we did the violet lantern tour which was the same tour cave tourists did in the 1800s we saw 3 miles of the caves by lantern :-) it was very different to the previous days tour and was very gooooood :-)
After the tour we left Kentucky, only stopping in Corbin, KY to pay our respects to the Colonel! We had lunch at the original KFC, not the best lunch but fun :-) afterwards we headed to Asheville, NC. We bought some Dr Pepper and both said "what's the worst that can happen?" Well! After a road block and an accident, not ours we just had to wait, which added an hour and a half to our journey we picked up our Dr Peppers and vowed never to say those fateful words again :-)
Well we did finally make it to Asheville, but it was very late so we headed straight a snooooooze... When we woke up we had some peanut butter on toast and got talk I to a German guy who had seen some bears the day previously and was going tons trail where there were waterfalls so Sheena and I went along with Bastian and trekked up to see one beautiful waterfall, it was huge with some parts of the water gushing and others trickling :-) we stared to head up higher but thought it might not be a trail but then a local guy that was passing said it was fine and we could follow him, retrospectively named SuperHiker! This trail was insane! We had to pull ourselves over a nigh on vertical rock face with a bit of rope, it was fun and challenging but boy did I sweat! The second waterfall was just as beautiful and we just sat up there for a while before the equally difficult trip back down!
We made it down and headed out for some lunch, Sheena and I both desperate for some vegetables or salad at this point we stopped at a little diner that had been there for 40 odd years and had the sweetest owners, Liz and her husband Phil, I had a BBQ chicken sub and Sheena had a hot dawg :-) and to our delight they had a veggie side dish selection, I went for the first one the menu, okra, when it came out it was deep fried okra :-( it was only then I noticed that mac'n'cheese is listed as a vegetable.... Welcome to the south!
The next day we had a food tour booked in downtown Asheville, we got there super early so we could wander round all the shops first, there were amazing book shops and little stalls selling local artists work and some obscure shops too selling purely Alice in Wonderland themed shisha pipes and such like...
At 145 we met Chris and the rest of our group from all over the US, we had Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte and Seattle :-)
The food tour was awesome, I tried cod for the first time! Pretty tasty when its beer battered... :-) and we had gnocci in a lovely Italian restaurant and some Cajun style tapas in a cocktail bar, we also went to a local independent chocolate shop where we were met with by the most enthusiastic person I've ever met! I had a sneaky salted caramel truffle WOW. :-)
After the tour we had another walk around and bought a few bit before booking a table at Tupelos Honey Cafe, it had an hour wait, we listened to a free music festival that was happening right outside and then got called in :-) our main reason for choosing this restaurant was the fried green tomatoes and they didn't disappoint! Sat atop some goats cheese cheese grits they were glorious :-)
Sheena and I had pulled pork and nutty chicken respectively but neither of us got close to finishing which was upsetting because the food was sooooo tasty!!!
The following day we left for Florida which is were I shall leave it today :-)
Lots of love x
