Picking up the story in New Mexico.... We decided Roswell wasn't conducive to a decents night sleep so we ploughed on through till 3am our time, we crossed 2 time zones! And drove straight to Phoenix, AZ where we stayed the night in a hostel with late check in! After 16 hours of driving we sure needed that snooze!
We woke up and had a look round Phoenix, its hotter than the sun incidentally, and made our way up to Flagstaff, AZ where we stayed in the Grand Canyon hostel :-)
Flagstaff was a cool little town with some fun bars and restaurants and some really nice shops :-)
Here we met EJ the marine biologist from New Zealand and Shannon from St. Louis who was on a crazy road trip across country and we decided pah who needs a Grand Canyon tour we'll do it ourselves :-) so we drove up there got parked up, tied our trainers up and headed off.
The grand canyon was AMAZing! Photos really can't do it justice, it was just so, well, big! We saw a Californian Condor which was cool and walked around the south rim for hours before watching the sun set, well sort of the sun sets next to the canyon but all the same! We had a beer and headed back to flagstaff.
The next day we went to Bearizona, clever huh :-) which was disappointing for me because the enclosures were so small... Then we headed to Anthem, AZ to stay with my gams cousin Melody and her wonderful husband Craig, we had a delicious home cooked dinner with Melody, Craig, their daughter Ashleigh and her husband Jason and son Preston, a lovely evening had by all! It was like I'd known them for years :-)
After saying my goodbyes the following morning I said goodbye to Phoenix and Shev :-( and headed to Nashville to meet Sheena :-) my flights were both short and pain free and I sat next yo interesting people on both :-) one guy from northern California was a rodeo rider and kept horses, we had lots to talk about :-)
We had dinner in a honky tonk bar in Nashville, TN fried pickle spears and buffalo wings, yum! Nashville was a fun colourful city but it had a weird feel to it, I wouldn't have liked to have wandered into a dodgy area but it was lively and the live music was awesome!
We drove in to Kentucky after dinner and got pulled over by the police! The car hire people hadn't told us that we needed to manually turn on the tail lights whoops! But he was super nice about it, he said 'these here new veeeehicles have manual switches for your tail lights' we guessed he'd lived in cave city his entire life :-)
After our run in with the law we found our little home for the next 2 days, a wigwam! Sure the shower didn't have a head on it and the wifi didn't work but it was home :-)
We woke up mid morning on the Tuesday and set off for mammoth cave, we had a spot of lunch in the oldy worldy cafe and got ourselves booked on to two tours, the historical tour, a two hour two mile walk through the cave with Ranger Joel from Alabama as our guide, we learnt all about the many uses for the cave through history from gypsum mining thousands of years ago to Salt Peter mining 200 years ago to it being a world first in Cave Tourism.
We ended up having dinner in McDonalds, whoops! And heading back to the wigwam :-)
And in the wigwam is where I shall leave it :-)
Hope everyone is good and missing me terribly :-)
Lots of love X
