Several people have asked me whether it has sunk in that I'm leaving for China in 3 weeks, I think it finally has. It wasn't being selected for China that did it, or finally raising all the money I needed to go. Even getting a cocktail of injections, meeting my partner, and finding out flight details didn't make me fully comprehend what I have got myself in for. Yet the other day, in a small back street in Newcastle, it finally hit me. As I bought a backpack I realised I would be fitting all the essentials I needed to live for a year into an incredibly small-looking space...
Welcome to my blog! As this is the first post I thought I would mention my aims for this blog and what I'm going to be doing. This blog is intended for a bucket-load of people; firstly for family and friends to keep them up to date with what I'm doing (as well as how I'm doing). Secondly I'm hoping to keep donors aware of where their money has gone and the impact it is having. Thirdly I know a couple of geography teachers may be reading this, so I will try and include some interesting opinions and perspective on issues brought up in the classroom. Finally when deciding on Project Trust and subsequently which project to go on I found past volunteers blogs really helpful, and I hope to do the same for possible future volunteers.
I'll attempt to update this blog weekly but updates may become quite sporadic, especially when traveling. Please comment on my blog as much as possible with questions, requests or even just stories about home; I'd love to hear them! Feel free to messege me on here or email me at [email protected]
Next week I'll give some details on how I got here (choosing PT, selection, fundraising and training) as well as the project I'll be working at and the area I'm in. Until then!
Stephen Rowland
P.S. The picture shows the afformentioned backpack, large enough for a years worth of clothes?
