Left Riga and went to Jumala, a seaside town about 30minutes away. Famous for all the posh houses of wealthy Russians during soviet period. Posh houses still there! Went for a swim in the Baltic sea but had to walk about 200 metres until it was deep enough to swim, glad it wasn't a surf race as would have been a very long wade. Water pretty disgusting as more like a river but sand was lovely and white. A nice change from most European beaches full of pebbles. Back on the road after laying in the sun for a while. Another interesting days driving on Latvian roads. To overtake here you just go, even if a car is coming the other way as they will move over - apparently. Crossed into Lithuania and very exciting as there was actually a border guard who asked for our passports, first time so far. Roads very noticeably better straight away, I think Latvia may have been hit harder than its Baltic neighbours. They have many more Russians, nearly 50/50 in riga, and were also hit badly by global financial crisis as were all living the high life above their means. Went to the hill of crosses, a place where people have come for centuries to place a cross as a show of faith. It was destroyed by the soviets but has continued since. Even the Pope said mass there in 1993 and placed a large cross. Pretty amazing to see the millions of crosses. Found guesthouse and this one is good. Attached to a hotel so had dinner there, I think Lithuania is even cheaper than Latvia. Down side is we tend to spend more if it's cheap.
