Day 62 - Sunday 2nd May
We arrived into Nazca around 7am (obviously being woken up in good time by Jonathon, who gave us a snack and collected our blanket and pillow. I was on the same bus as the Spanish couple Jordi and Karen so we got straight in a taxi and headed to the airport. I was told about the Nazca lines as a small child and have always, always wanted to go there so had no choice but to pay the $80 for the overflight. Mysterious drawings in the desert up to 300m in length are scattered around Nazca and no-one knows why...
We took a 40 minute flight on a little Cessna C207, a pilot, copilot and 5 of us passengers. We managed to pull a few g's in some tight turns and the whole flight was good, but overall the lines were sadly underwhelming. Even flying low, they seem quite small and unimpressive. A little too much anticipation and not enough sleep I think...
We caught the local bus for a few hours onto Ica and a taxi later by midday we were in Huacachina, an amazing Oasis town that dons the back of the 50 Neuvo Soles note. HUGE sand dunes come out of nowhere outside of Ica and Huacachina nestles right in the middle, dominated on all sides. I was far too tired to do much for the day so left the others, explored the town (5 minutes), read by the hostel pool and took a nice siesta. We ate dinner by the lagoon, followed by compulsory pisco sours (a sort of brandy drink with sugar, lemon and eggs - nice) before getting a reasonably early night. It's a real quiet town during the week...
