Day 49 - Monday 19th April
Another early start for the bumpy bus ride up to Lake Titicaca (Great Puma - due to it's shape), one of the worlds highest navigable lakes. Beautifully clear blue and beautfiully set we got a ferry over to Isla Del Sol, the birthplace of the sun god in Incan tradition. An awesome island that turned out to be a definite highlight it feels like something you'd get in Peter Pan or some fairy tale. Rising out of the sea and with Incan ruins scattered around it is set perfectly in the lake with snow-capped mountains in the background. We wondered the island and enjoyed a bottle of wine over sunset before catching a fantastic 3 course meal for just £2.50. Heading back to our hotel room, another £2.50 bargain we hung out and played cards, thankfully heating up mine and Nick's room against the bitter night cold.
Day 50 - Tuesday 20th April
I happened to wake up at 6am and caught the sky brightening so I took the blankets of my bed and my iPod and parked myself on a bench on the veranda. 20 minutes later there was an absolutely glorious sunrise over the snowy mountains, reflecting off the lake and providing some much needed warmth.
A lazy morning back on the ferry and we were away on a bus across the Peruvian border and into Puno, a Peruvian city the other side or Lake Titicaca. We had some hours to kill before the bus to Cusco so we got a tour across to some unbelievably floating islands made of reeds. The Islas Del Uros were first made 700 years ago to hide from the incas and are literally buoyant aluvium lashed together with reeds and full families set themselves up in reed houses and reed boats. There are 60 islands, each with a president, and you could not have found friendlier people. A really good 4 hours well spent for £6...
