Last weekend my very nice friend and her fiancee took me to Bayeux to see the Tapestry!!
First stop the creperie for a chocolate crepe - brain food of course!
As we are here to learn about Norman history etc (I think...) William the Conqueror is someone we are studying so this was almost an educational trip... until we started discussing who would play who if we were to make a hollywood movie of the Tapestry...
(Jeremy Irons as William and Alan Rickman as Harold if you were wondering)
William is one of the Dukes of Normandy who we are studying amongst others such as Richard the Lion Heart and King John - and every time our teacher talks about them I really cant help humming "Robin Hood and Little John riding through the forest oo de la li oo de la li golly what a day"
I am sure Stuart will know what that is referring too!
For any one who doesnt know it is a song from the Disney version of Robin Hood. And, as we believe it to be highly relevant, my friend and I are going to watch that and of course Robin Hood Prince of Theives... for learning of course - not at all to oggle a young Kevin Costner and cry at the little animals...
We also got into the Bayeux tapestry for half price as we are students!! Shame theres no topshop here!
We also visited the Bayeux cathedral which is a fantastic building (photos in new album). Bayeux is also home to many memories of WWII.
In the film at the Bayeux Tapestry it mentions the monument situate at the British WWII cemetery situated just outside the town.
After we finished at the Tapestry we went to visit the cemetery. It is really quite a moving place, despite the busy road that runs past the entrance, it is very peaceful and a beautifully kept place of rest. I have put a couple of photos up in the album but I didnt want to take many as you feel it is also a private place.
A reef from the family of an elderly lady who lost her husband in the war after one year of marriage and to this day can recite his number by heart.
Makes you appreciate what these soldiers did ultimately for us
