WEEK 1 - BEAUTIFUL BRITTANY!
Well what a great start to our journey Brittany has been. The sun has shone throughout and we've been in collective heaven with oysters & cider at every turn! Paul has gorged on obscene amounts of oysters at £2.40 a dozen whilst I've downed cider out of bowels (well when in Rome eh!). They even sell it by the roadside which has been my excuse to shirk driving duties. We've now finished the week by driving south to Nantes, lured by the promise of excellent cheap restaurants. And we certainly weren't disappointed with last night's 3 course meal at the famous 'Brasserie Cigale' for €16.50 each! Even better was the fact that our bed was only a short stumble away in a nearby car park Brings home the fact what a rip-off the UK is...this was one of several free car parks right in the city centre!
Places Visited:
St.Malo - Cancale - Mont St.Michel - Dinan - Foret de Paimpont - Vannes - Nantes
Highlights:
- Cheapest lunch ever in Cancale - 24 oysters from market for £5 washed down with free bottle of muscadet donated to us by lovely local wine merchant!
- Staying overnight right next to Mont St.Michel and exploring it in the evening once all the crowds had departed.
- French Municipal Campsites - cheap as chips, really nice and only a short bike ride along river/sea to town centre.
Vannes - buzzy beautiful sailing town with loads of islands to explore (& best cider so far!).
Lowpoints:
- Everything that could go wrong did go wrong with both our laptop and mobiles. So we took a week off from the world of communication!
- Arriving in St.Malo on a miserable, wet Monday morning feeling shattered and hung-over (Mojitos only £3.50 on ferry!), with Paul convinced he'd left camera in Portsmouth (it turned up later) and me full of dread that we'd made a terrible mistake!!
