Hello All
Landed safely in Washington...despite nearly missing our first flight from not hearing the boarding announcements until the very final one..after legging it from the toilet and finding Jonny looking aimlessly at the boarding moniters we made it and were probably the last people to board the plane! Good start! We have both adapted quickly to living out of the smallest bag known to man kind and reckon we'll have great fun:-). Hostel is much nicer than imagined despite looking like the amytaville horror house when we walked up to it! But its great and the people are lovely here -so far so good...I was even given a cabbage patch kid quilt...obviously meant for a child not someone who is almost knocking on 6ft! Sharing a room with 2 other guys, one from Brtiain and Thomas from Germany, who we've spent some time with.
First day we headed down to Washington at some rediculous time of the morning because we couldnt sleep...ear plugs are next on the shopping list :-) Went to see all the main sites and I had my first BLONDE moment...I doubt it could get any worse lol! First stop ...the whitehouse! Called my mum to tell her we were standing outside the whitehouse...yey exciting...thought nothing of it....carried on with our day and visitited other places only then to see a sign post for the Whithouse going in another direction! Doh...we were infact standing outside Capitol Building (which is the picture on this Blog)...Jonny ripped it out of me all day....funny though how he didnt notice either! It was white and big for god sake....easy mistake to make haha! So after seeing the capitol building we visitied the Space museum which was really cool...we even got ot touch a piece of the moon! How cool! Saw parts of Apollo 11 and the first orbitor to go around the world, but my favourite part was seeing Dorothy's red shoes from the Wizard of Oz! Random to see her shoes in a space museum but it was cool! Kermit was also there and C3PO and R2D2 from Star Wars! Then we walked down to see the Washington Monument and hired a pedalo on the Tidal Basin to go and see the Jefferson Memorial. Jonny then wanted to go and sit in the same place where they sat in Wedding Crashers outside Lincoln Memorial looking over the Reflecting Pool and then headed back through the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial then to the real Whitehouse this time. Hectic first day to say the least! Spent the night chilling out on the hammock in the back garden of the hostel and got talking to Thomas one of our room mates who gave us plenty of suggestions for day 2...if we could take anymore walking that is!
So Day 2 we headed to Arlington Cemetary, which was absolutley enourmous...saw JFK's and Jackie Kennedy's gravesights...then I decide to start taking loads of photos...zoomed in on one cos everyone seemed to be staring in that direction...only to realise there was a real funeral taking place and there's me the toursit with the camera pointing right in their direction! Oh dear - really showing respect there - not! After that we walked downtown, ate in the poshest McDonalds ever and then had a tour around the house where Lincoln died...grim! It was really confusing because there wasnt much info in the house and if you dont know much about Lincoln you kind of assume that was his house...which took us 5 minutes to walk around! So we assumed that was the poor guys house...My uni house was much better than his! wrong again! It was a german tailors house who let Lincoln in after he was shot....and thats where he died! There were still chairs placed at the bottom of the bed where people sat while he was ebing treated..morbid! Have put the pics up so you can see it all there! After busy day number 2 we headed home and had a good sleep....only to be woken by Thomas and Jonny who wanted to head downtown again to take pictures at night...well worth it despite being tired. Thats when Jonny had his first near death experience...was kinda thinking it might be by a mugger as we were the only people around...but know it was by a psycho american driver who didnt stop at the pedestrian crossing....its a good job jonnys's so skinny or he'd of been flattened big time! The shock on everyones face was a good camera moment...gutted I wasnt prepared lol! After trapsing around washington in the freezing cold taking pictures we headed back to the hostel for a well earned sleep to catch a bus the next day to New York , New York!
