We've been on Koh Chang for about 9 days now and not done a great deal. We've mainly been working on our non-existent tans, since it seems a crime to come home from 6 months in Asia (in my case) and still look albino. Lonely beach is pretty and the water is good and it's a short walk from our bungalow, so most days have been spent there.
We've also taken a taxi to the fishing village - which we left pretty quickly due to the delicious stench of dried fish. On that day we then went to White Sands beach. That's where the rich people go - we went to see what it was like and have dinner. The beach wasn’t as nice as lonely beach and we were quite disappointed with the supposedly luxury resorts but it was a nice change of scenery. We had a great dinner at a fancy Italian place where the waiters wore bow ties!! We stole a roll of loo paper because we'd run out at the bungalow! How pikey is that!! But the meal cost nearly 10 pounds each, which is a fortune out here, so we felt we deserved a complimentary loo roll. I got car sick on the way over to White Sands due to all the hills - that was a bit rubbish.
Today we took a boat to Koh Wai - a tiny island about an hours boat ride away. It was very peaceful and the water was amazingly clear! Spent the day reading our books. I've become very well read recently!!
Yesterday Claire did and introduction to scuba diving in a pool (I can't because of my stupid arm) and tomorrow she's going on 2 dives in the sea with them. She's petrified of being eaten by sharks - which makes me laugh - but I shouldn't because she really is scared! She thinks she might cry before she gets out of the boat tomorrow - she was welling up when she bought the ticket!!! I feel I should warn her instructor - he's not going to know what's hit him! I suggested I might come on the boat with her, but she said she didn't think it would help. Poor Claire!!
We’ve been out lots in the evenings - the night life's not amazing, but we're having a nice time! I've been quite merry on a few occasions and managed to fall over and graze my knee and elbow (of my broken arm!) I don't think the arm has been damaged as a result. We've also been to Thai boxing (which was a bit lame) and a fire show - they have them everywhere on Thai beaches - that was good. Had lots of nice food, but the town we're in is a bit small and we've exhausted all the places now - I’m considering getting a delivery curry from white sands delivered to our bungalow - just for a change!
Oh! I’ve also been running quite a bit – which is really tough here because it’s so hilly! A Thai came up to me when we were out in the evening and said how impressed he was that I was running (I’m quite recognizable sadly – with my blue broken arm and all!) – that must mean it’s stupid thing to do! Haven’t seen anyone else doing it! Getting concerned that spending all my time lying on a beach will result in an unrecognizable body when I get home! We only have a mirror where you can see your shoulders up. But Claire did make an interesting point the other day – we’re supposed to be “eating healthily” so that we come home thinner – especially Claire since she’s been living in Africa where they’re all starving! But we’re not doing amazingly well – I think I look the same as when I left! But Claire said that since being in Koh Chang she’s become much more comfortable with her body – since she can only see her shoulders up! I definitely think that’s the way forward – no-more full length mirrors!
It's the longest I’ve spent anywhere here - strange to be settled for so long. We leave on Thursday, which gives me 3 more days to burn as much of my skin as possible and appreciate the hot summer sun, before making our way home. Not looking forward to the English winter! It’s going to be so cold and dark.
