Our experience in China can be defined as “unexpected”.
Unexpectedly, and since the very first moment, we perceived the economic development of the today’s China. Thousands of constructions sights, imposing and efficient infrastructures, modern cities with luxury shopping malls and fancy cars all around.
Unexpectedly, the fast growing middle-class was so visible. Partly because of the growing wealth, and partly because we were travelling during the Chinese summer holiday, we had to share our sightseeing with many…many many many…many many many Chinese tourists. Crowds of Chinese!!! We were the little white dots in a yellow sea of tourists ;)
Unexpectedly, travelling in China was more expensive than we thought. Locals travel more and more and are willing to pay expensive entrance fees and to spend a lot of money in souvenirs. And so did we (for the entrance fees ;)). But also the prices of housing, food and transportation are sometimes approaching to European levels.
Unexpectedly (for Ste but not for Mat, who was psychologically ready for this!) communication with locals was very difficult, especially at the beginning. Even ordering a meal became a challenge. Surprisingly, almost nobody speaks English, some because they didn’t learn and some others because they don’t dare to. Therefore, we had to learn some basics words, some basics signs and especially to download the magic “Chinese-English translation App”!!
And unexpectedly, we discovered a very beautiful nature in China. We knew before leaving that on our path we would have the chance to see some natural beauties, but being “on sight” we actually realised that in this huge country there is a lot to see and many places to discover.
