We left at 5:15 am in order to miss the Nairobi city traffic and arrived at our site approximately 21/2 hours later. We experienced sensory overload as we watched the city come to life. People walking everywhere including children going to,school in their brightly coloured uniforms of red, green, blue and grey. women were opening their small shops that sold foodstuffs, clothing, material, etc. And some men were opening their stores that sold coal, hardware, gates, timber etc. Also there were many groups of men talking in groups, and young men on their motorcycles hanging out! Cars, bicycles, motorbikes, transport trucks, vans, taxies, and buses, were all vying for a place on the road!!!
The children were waiting in their classrooms for us and of course were extremely excited!!!! All were richly deserving especially those with physical and intellectual difficulties. As the 500 kits were given out, we wished them "lala salama"--sleep well. I know that there were 500 very happy children and families.
after the distribution we visited the home of a previous recipient, a grandmother, daughter and two, children. They were of Maasai origin and lived in a small hut made of cow dung. We all crowded into the room, and she was so,proud to,show us the mattress, and blanket still being used.
We then visited a centre for rescued girls either from forced marriages or extremely poor living conditions. The joy and happiness they exhibited was so wonderful to see!!!!
