A relaxing most enjoyable day here. Unfortunately still raining, but comes and goes and not cold, but still windy!!!! Rosie took me for a tour around the bay and then to Weta Village, that is the location of all the Lord of the Rings, and many more movies. A husband and wife team started it about 20 years ago in their home and now the industry employs over 3000 people. Despite their success, the couple still live in the area in an ordinary home and their children attend the local school. James Cameron (movie director who did Titanic) now lives here on a sheep station north of Wellington and has also embraced the community, starting a film program at one of the high schools and supporting many charities in the area. I didn't know much about the production of these types of films and it really was amazing to see the artistry and talent, and everyone so enthusiastic and happy in their work.
The world speed waterskiing championships have started here in Wellington, so I had a bird's eye view from Rosie's place watching all the activities. In addition it was spectacular to see the airplanes arriving and departing over the bay and along the runway.
Later went for a walk along the beach and the local marina, then enjoyed a yummy butternut squash casserole and a glass of wine for supper with my hostess. Watched The Whale Runner, that is about the Maori and very powerful. It was the People's choice at the Toronto Film Festival one year. Also one about the earthquakes and restoration of Christchurch. Am visiting there later, so will see and learn more about that.
