Up super early at 6.45am - just like a normal TCV day! We met Laszlo at 8am to drive to Odorheiu. This morning's task was to clean the river in town as part of a community project. After a quick speech from the mayor, everyone set off. Most of the volunteers were teenage kids from local schools, eager to be involved and to make a difference. I got talking to one girl, with whom I practised my Romanian while she practised her English!
The clean-up involved clearing the litter with a pair of gloves and a bin bag. The river was in a pretty bad state: signs of sewage in the water, dumped rubbish and Japanese Knotweed. Bizarrely we had no other equipment such as litter pickers or waterproof gloves so we had to gingerly make do with what we had.
This only continued until 11am, when it ended with some media attention and photos. Michael got interviewed by MTV1 Hungary again! We all found this hilarious. As soon as that was over, we made a beeline for the local bar for a drink. We then drove back to Meresti to have lunch at Ibolya's place for all four of us. We had bean soup and followed by pancakes with sweet jam inside - they were sooo good! We devoured them all.
We decided to spend the remaining afternoon at Michael's house, in the garden. It was so lovely to chill out among the cats and the flowers, under the sun. Simon looked like he was meditating at one point with his arms elevated in the air. It turned out he wasn't which meant that Kate and I were quietly laughing away for no reason!
Our afternoon ended with entertainment from Barney, the barn dog who didn't actually live there. He was very submissive to the family dog and had the gentlest, kind and fun nature I have ever seen in a dog.
Cow milking for the boys followed, who loved every second of it. The boys played with Chockie, Ibolya's dog, then we all headed to the bar for the evening.
