The medieval village of the Carcassonne is a little known wonder of France, dating back to early 3500BC - a key stronghold during the time of Charlemagne (Pa I remembered all your stories about Charlemagne). This was my first visit to a medieval fortress - absolutely gorgeous and rustic with a moat, surrounding village, massive courtyard and ramparts - check out the photo of me storming the ramparts :)
The village surrounding the Chateau of Carcassone, within the main city walls is full of narrow cobbled lane ways with medieval trinket shops and cafes.
We stayed the night in the new Carcassone, much to the disappointment of many of us - staying in a gorgeous converted 18th century building. Fabulous three course dinner with a Corn and Tomato Tart, Pork and Duck Cassoulet and an apricot custard flan thinggy - yes it was amazing, no I can't remember what it was called we were onto our second bottle of wine.
To see the real Carcassonne, a couple of us went in search of the local bars. Picture a small french village, on a Friday night - with the locals not well versed in English! There was one bar open in Carcassonne on a Friday night run by a french guy who himself had been drinking most of the day and took the European idea of 'free pouring' liberally - with G&T becoming G with a sip of T. We found a hidden pool table and fooseball table out the back and lounged out there with the drunken owner running out to check out on us every 10 minutes yelling out AYYYY - trying to be an Aussie for the night! Clearly not an entrepreneur giving out jugs of wine 'free' with a 2 Euro glass of wine????
