Manly, New South Wales
Following our tearful departure we left our gathering of friends and family to board the new Airbus 380 for our flight to Sydney. The flight was great, if you ever come over you should try it out with Singapore Airlines, it's a huge plane, quite scary in size on the outside but once on board you wouldn't know you were on it.It's the same seating plan as a 747 (what a blokey thing to say!) and you have no idea there are two floors. It was very comfortable, the food was yummy (and we've never said that about plane food) and the 'on demand' entertainment was great although after a couple of Singapore slings and some sleeping tablets we were out cold! After 24 hours, including an hour in Singapore, we landed in Sydney and what a great start to our new life in Oz.Straight through passport control, directly to our luggage and out the door at 7:45am to beaming sun, clear blue sky without a cloud to be seen - we have arrived! We were too early to check in to our hotel so went walking the streets. We had brunch in 'Pancakes on the Rocks' - a famous place to eat, then strolled around the city and caught a ferry round to Darling Harbour to enjoy the sites and get our bearings. Finally we checked into our hotel at around 2pm. We had a short sleep before going out for a quick pizza and then headed up to the roof top pool area at the hotel to watch the 9pm firework display which they put on for the kids - what an amazing taster for what was about to come.
We had left it too late to find a spot anywhere closer to the bridge so decided to enjoy the start of the New Year back on our roof top terrace whilst sipping the complementary champagne - it was a tough choice believe me!It was an amazing experience watching the fireworks, we had one of the best views in the city - a 360 degree panoramic of the city skyline, the harbour bridge, the opera house and right up and down the harbour where there were multiple synchronized displays. The crescendo went off over the bridge and made me cry it was so amazing - although it wasn't taking much by that stage! New Year's Day was to be spent over in Manly where we enjoyed breakfast on the beach front at 11am to celebrate the English New Year - we are 11 hours ahead of GMT in case you hadn't worked that out. Then we walked the streets to get a feel for what would become our new home.
