Kim's European Journey
Rome is very, very busy. Rachel and I took a sight seeing bus today around the city. It covered most of the areas, such as the Roman forum (see photo). There are ruins randomly situated around the whole city, though. It is really fascinating. It is an interesting contrast because right next to a Roman wall that is decaying is a pizzeria built in 1900. The traffic around the city is horrendous, and apparantly has been since the time of Caesar. He used to regulate the chariots that could travel around the city because of the congestion. The one area that the bus tour didnt cover extensively is the Vatican, which I thought would be interesting to see on bus.
The Colisseum is very grand and amazing, but I think that St.Peters Basillica is much more stunning to see in person. Bernini designed the pavillion in front and the interior of the basillica and Michelangelo designed the dome. It is the largest basillica in the world, and certainly appears so from the outside.
After the bus tour, we found a local pizza place and were not disappointed. Rule of thumb: if the locals are eating there, its a pretty good guarantee. Italian pizza so far as we have seen is much different from American pizza. The crust is soft and thick (more like deep dish, but not quite that thick). Cheese is not a staple on the pizzas. Most have large chunks of either meet or veggies (usually veggies). We have found that they dont generally use a thin sauce, but rather a really chunky tomato sauce. One of the pizzas at this place had fresh veggies on it and was hardly cooked. It had huge slabs of mozarella cheese just randomly placed. It looked amazing, but I opted for green peppers, olives, and zucchini with mozarella cheese.... it is going to be difficult to go back to Donatos.
We are getting our laundry done right now, but this afternoon we are going to walk around the Roman forum and the Colisseum.
