Have had a very busy and wet couple of days since we arrived in Vietnam - very rainy, cloudy and windy! Had a result getting from the airport to our hostel in that we spoke to a random man at the airport in Laos who said we could get a lift from the airport into Hanoi for 2$ each and we didnt have to stay at the guest house if we didnt want to. Another random man picked just us up(with sians name on a sign - we felt very important!)and drove us to the guest house, on first glance it looked like a side street dive with flashing neon lights but when we went in we couldnt believe our luck - really plush with free internet, free breakfast, games room, film room etc. We paid 6$ each for a dorm room and were abit worried as hadnt been in a dorm yet but on the first night it was just me and sian and 6 beds - first time on a top bunk in about 10years!Yesterday we did a day trio to Halong Bay - our Vietnamese tour guide Sun-nee said if you dont go to halong bay when you come to my country you havent properly been to vietnam!it was gorgeous there, 2000 islands, amazing views - we(I) had fresh seafood on the boat and then Kayaked round a few of the coves and caves, the only thin g we needed was the sun - it was drizzling and misty and i was wet in the kayak because i half fell in the water getting in!!then we went to a massive cave - the vietnamese had made it really touristy - tacky xmas trees style lights everywhere - they even had computers in the caves and penguin bins and one man was playing solitaire which we found hilarious and lots of 'natural' fountains with clearly visable wires and we basically just traipsed through one after another! long day as it took us 3 1/2 hours travel each way but pleased we got to go there. Today we have booked our bus ticket to travel down south - absolute bargin - to travel from North to South on a hop on/hop off ticket it cost us 39$/24pounds then we spent the day walking around the city - Hanoi is insane - so many cars and motorbikes on the road - saw one scooter with 4 people on it and others carrying about a ton of cement or something - constant honking and beeping - if you want to cross the street the only way is to walk really slowly across so they have time to swerve round you - we were abit nervy at first but now we are pros and immune to the beeps! went to the history museum, Vietnam Revolution Museum and Hoa Lo Prison tour - named the Hanoi Hilton! Just found our way back to our hotel and are waiting to be picked up to head down to Hue - 12 hours on the overnight bus, wish us luck!
