Mexico with Bryn: Travel Adviser - STA Travel
Bryn flew off to Mexico for a 14 day break - visiting Mexico City, Oaxaca, Merida, Playa del Carmen and Cancun for some relaxing and an amazing cultural experience.
Highlights:
In Mexico City I started with the tour of Mexico City, also known as the Ciudad de los Palacios (City of Palaces), as well as the Teotihuacan pyramids and Guadalupe shrine. Mexico is a spot for ancient ruins and these spots should not be missed!
Cancun is the place to go dancing and hit the beach to swim in clear, beautiful water (even with dolphins!). The local open restaurants are great and they cook your tacos right in front of you...mmmm deliciouso.
I love the Latin culture and the many Mexicano families that I was able to meet and learn from their open-spirited and loving way of life.
Lowlights:
Without a great amount of Spanish, travelling around Central America can be tricky at times. I recommend using the Bamba Bus, a hop-on, hop-off bus pass through Mexico and Central America. For around $600 I was able to travel to Mexico City, Oaxaca, Merida, Playa del Carmen and Cancun (there are more stops along this route, but for the amount of time that I had for my trip, this is all that I could fit in.)
Tips:
Book ahead for both Playa del Carmen and Cancun, because both are pretty popular destinations especially during Spring Break time.
Think about a Gap Adventures independent experience - I did one on arrival and it really helped me to get my wits together and get advice from a local guide as to ways to go about other portions of my trip - money well spent!
Bryn recommends this trip for:
Anyone really, Mexico has so much to offer! For the beaches, Playa Maya in Playa del Carmen is full of couples and honeymooners where as Cancun is the hot spot for young singles, but also great for friends and even families!
Total holiday cost:
Return flights to Mexico (from Los Angeles): Fr $2,289
Bamba bus: Fr $608
Gap Adventures independent experience: Fr $939
Score out of 10:
9/10

Meta In an earlier post, I had aennuocnd that we were traveling to Oaxaca (pronounced Wah ha Kuh ), Mexico, but due to the current political unrest concerning alleged voting irregularities, we changed our flights to avoid the demonstrations. That and when I would tell people where I was going they would say, you're going to the armpit of Mexico?!? Quite the reputation.
