We are still in love with this little portside city. At last, we took it a little more easy. We did some serious laundry--we even hung clothes out on a line--so fresh!! The we did a power-walk down the winding roads that make up this little portion of the Wellington area. Kelburn is the oldest portion of Wellington and shows a strong Dutch and German influence. Kelburn is set on a big rock hill on which folks throughout the generations have carved out a shelf in the rock for foundation and built their homes. So, as you walk along a street, the houses may be above you, accessible by a zigzagging stair-case upwards, or they can be below you, accessible by stairs going down the hill—very few are at street-level. Many are 100 years old or more and have a spectacular view of the harbor.
We did our morning exercise, and boy was it effective - many, many steep hills but beautiful views to distract us from the agony. Then we made a luscious breakfast of eggs, sausage, spinach and tomatoes along with a bowl of old-fashioned oatmeal. I know, it may not sound appetizing to some of you but we have grown to love this hearty breakfast/lunch!
We toured the Wellington Botanic Gardens today which are just steps from our cute little apartment - forgot to say that the apartment's name is Beaulieu -- beautiful. We love botanical gardens and again, this one set itself apart from all others we have visited before. Hopefully the photos will tell the story. I'll say this, if you like flowers and sweet stories, you might like the photos. I just hope I have not bored you by uploading far too many picutures!
We debated on whether to find a wonderful restaurant here for dinner tonight or to simply have dinner at home - then we passd the Kilburn butcher shop and decided to pick-up chicken cordon bleu, and lamb kabobs. We will enjoy a relaxing dinner at home tonight, besides, I love to cook, especially in these little exotic apartments - it is like playing house! We will shoot for the highly recommended Capitol Restaurant tomorrow night.
