We woke up about 5 this morning and went to the tarin station to get oour tickets. Whilst waiting 2 policemen came inn and started blowing their whistles at first we thought there was a raid or something but no we were all ushered to stand up and listen to the national anthem, was strange. All the kids that were running around stopped dead in their tracks and looked up at the kings picture and stayed in that position until the end.
Anyway the train journey was interesting to say the least. We were in third class for a 2 hour journey. I managed to get a seat but steve had to stand. We must have stopped at 8 more stations and more and more people kept cramming into this tiny carriage. i had a thai lady basically sitting on my lap. There was no fan or ac just windows blowing in very hot air. I think we will both be coming back 5 stone lighter. The heat is horrible!
Anyway once in ayutthaya we left our bags at the train station and hired out some mountain bikes. We biked on these manic roads around the old city but the sights are amazing (i need to figure out how to upload images). The temples here were destroyed around 400 years ago and the remains are beautiful. All the buddhas heads were chopped of and all that id left are their legs in sitting position. We visited a few other temples and stopped off at a local narket drank a coconut and the kind lady gave us some ice to pour over us. They were laughing bacause we couldnt stand the heat.
The people here are so nice and smily!
We visited Elephant palace as you can see in the pic. There was about 12 elephants ina small inclosure was not very nice. They kept swaying their trunks back and forth as if depressed. They had two baby elephants chained to a post. We fed the elephants bannanas and nuts. Then we sat and watched the baby elephants swinging hopps on his trunk and performing other tricks. The elephants are then sent into the croud to collect money. They suck it up their trunks and put it in their mahout's pocket. They are rewarded with milk that is fed through a beer bong like device. Very funny to watch.
we finally gave up on our bike trip at about 3pm it was just too hot. We had a shower at local guest house and sat outside and chatted with the owner. He kept giving us puzzles to complete but we couldnt do them, it was highly entertaining. A canadian guy joined in and we ended up drinking with him for the next five hours.
Our train comes at 9pm so now off. Hope everyone is well.
