STA Travel Canada Staff Journal
Nelson is a lively little town on the northern tip of the South Island, however I will always remember it as the site of my most daring adventure sport experience - this was where I took a deep breath and signed up to throw myself out of an airplane at 1300 ft! Skydiving over Able Tasman National Park really was a once in a lifetime experience.
I was in New Zealand for 8 months on a working holiday and when my brother came down to visit me I said we'd go skydiving. After all, you can't visit New Zealand without throwing yourself off a bridge or out of an airplane. It is the adventure capital of the world. I wasn't really nervous until I was getting the gear on but the most terrifying moment was hanging out the plane's open door as my tandem partner sat on the edge and pushed us out. The freefall was intense and views of the coast were incredible. It was an amazing rush, I'm glad to have done it and can brag about it for the rest of my life. I highly recommend Able Tasman Skydive, STA Travel can book your jump with them before you leave for your trip (a good idea if you think you might chicken out once you are there!)
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, there are a number of beautiful parks in the area. I did a day walk in Able Tasman National Park as saw the amazing golden bays up close, and also did a day walk along the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlbourgh Sounds. Tramping (Kiwi for multi-day hikes) on these trails is an extremely popular activity. It is also a great foodie area with fresh seafood and the world famous wines from the Marlbourgh region.
