1st Day in Siem Reap
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The first thing that hits you when you reach the immigration counters at the Siem Reap airport is the friendliness of the immigration staff. Air travel today entails having to wait in long immigration queues and face up to rude immigration officers, the Siem Reap airport by contrast appeared to be have been pulled out of a 60's movie where one walked from the aircraft to the terminal and met with polite regular folk who greet you with a smile. As is my wont i had misplaced my online visa and the officer kept cheering me on in Khmer while I empitied my rucksack on his counter and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper which was my visa. He waved me through and I was in on my way to visit Ankor Wat...A prominent TICK in my bucket list.
The driver from the hotel La ....De La Ankor was outside the arrival terminal and hauled me across the to the hotel. I checked in showered, hired a cycle from the hotel and left to explore the city. I found my way to the Ankor National Museum. Given the mistque that surrounds Siem Reap I found the museum fairly unimpressive. I was hopelessly lost on my ride back to the hotel and after cycling back to the airport in search of the hotel i flagged a tuk - tuk down, loaded my cycle on and hitched a ride back to the hotel.
