Day 4 dawned very wet which set us up for a low spirited start before Adrian suffered a puncture. We pushed on until the hill before the Arran Ferry, very, very, very steep and long but a great decent, or could have been without the driving rain and wind. Elevenses went down well sat in a bus shelter at Clanoinaig waiting for the boat to Lochranza, which was not unlike the chain ferry at Cowes, only colder!
Arran greeted us shrouded us in rain, cloud and wind, and up went before descending in low visibility to Brodd*** via the coast road for the Ardrossan Ferry; this is so much more luxurios that it felt like a liner but we were cold wet and anxious to meet Don's Aunt Betty! As we came off the ferry there was Betty, and Don's sister Fiona, anxious to greet her favourite nephew and drag him off to lunch. After polite exchanges the rest of us pressed on to Kilmarnock, what a trip!
It should have been dshort and sweet but upon discovering a cycle trak marked "Kilmarnock 12 miles" we followed it for 15 miles to find us 14 miles from Kilmarnock!! However the high spots of the trip were yet to come. A collision between Tonger and Adrian which somehow saw both stay in the saddle, precluded the flooded tunnel incident when Adrian fell off his bike before rolling, majestically, into the River K! How we laughed!! Shortly afterwards Duts mis-managed a short slope and came off at speed (5mph?), how we chuckled again. Back in the saddle another 10 miles and we were home for the night.
A delightful exchange followed when the advance dinner party, Don and Tonger, quizzed the reception staff, and their helpers as to th elocation of the nearest pub which served food. They were sent 5 minutes walk to the Parched Poet, 20 minutes away, which was shut, which in fact opens in September!! Cue split group, Burger King and KFC for Mr Scrabster, Col Mustard and believers, while the bad boys slipped down town.
Until tomorrow....
