Night location: Vienna
A day of Viennese culture and cuisine. We survived our overnight train experience with the main complaint being that our cabin became unbearably hot. At 3:20am Amber opened the window for a blast of cool air. David declared that the howling gush of air was glorious!
After leaving our bags at the hotel we spent some time in the city centre before making our way to The Hofburg for a performance of The Spanish Riding School. With 450 years of history, this is the oldest horse riding academy in the world. The magnificent Winter Riding School of the Imperial Palace was completed in 1735 and since then has been home to the Lipizzaner stallions and their riders. The performance was fantastic as the horses danced and performed difficult stunts and manoeuvres.
We enjoyed a Viennese lunch and then returned to the hotel for an afternoon nap. Before our evening entertainment we dined at the Imperial Hotel where the highlight was definitely the sweets. David particularly enjoyed his traditional Apple Strudel.
After this we furthered our Viennese cultural experience with a performance of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the Musikverein. The concert hall was ornately gilded and large chandeliers glittered as we listened to Strauss and Schubert. A brilliant start to our time in Vienna.

Althea Halliday Hello darlings What a lovely shot of you, Amber, in the midst of such gilded beauty, and how wonderful to be able to 'lose' yourselves in the haunting sound of Schubert and Strauss. And the performance of the horses seemed to be quite out of the box. (I was fascinated by the history of the school, and the cleverness of the manoeuvres.) You will have so many stories to tell and pictures to share. Love as always, Mum xx
