Drove to Kaitia for tour. Visited the Ancient Kauri Kingdom where they have logs and stumps from local swamps, some of which are 45,000years old and have survived 2 ice ages. The carvings are unbeliveable. Hourhora Head harbour to see Mount Camel, a tall volcanic outcrop at the mouth of the harbour. Walked on Rarawa Beach, white silica sand so fine it was like flour. Picnic lunch at Tapotuopotu bay, a beautiful sandy beach on the Pacific Ocean. Cape Reinga lighthouse, the point where Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. In Maori belief, Reinga is the departing place of the spirits of the recently deceased. Drove thru Te Paki stream to Ninety Mile Beach where we sandboarded on the dunes. We saw surf fishing and kite fishing- the fishermen reel out 2000 meters of lineweighted with sand, and a line tied with multiple hooks that drag thru the surf. They catch mainly red snapper- really neat to see. Drove the length of the beach and headedback to Ahipara for the night.
