Cape Town, South Africa
OK, so I said I would keep you all updated and so I stole this programme thing off aislinn and maia to do so.
I flew out to doha airport on 28th July and ran for the plane as the board said 'flight closing'. In doing so I missed out on calling Theo and everyone to say bye and so wqas pretty pissed when I realised the flight was actually delayed by two hours! Then reality kicked in- I had to catch another plane from Doha at 7am and we wouldn't get in until 9am. s*** sakes I was going to be stuck in saudi arabia on my own where women get spat on and raped and nasty stuff happens. I asked the steward who said the plane would wait for me and I foolishly believed him and got a bit distracted by all the cool gadgets!
I arrived at Doha to find that the plane had not waited for me at all!! stress!! but then was relieved to be told i would be put up in a hotel for the day until my flight that evening. So it all turned out well and I met a lovely chatty woman from east london (not where i'm from but the one in south africa!) as she was catching the same flight we stuck together and were fine. she was saying how the airline had lost her bag last time which made me worry but when I got to Cape Town (finally!) my bags were safe and sound!
I met Amanda at the airport (the team leader of the volunteer programme) and we drove back to the volunteer house. She's really funny and was telling me not to stress about coming late as african time is different to any other time! she also said that the wales should be in at kalk bay soon but i haven't seen one yet. I dropped my stuff off and then went straight back out to the townships where Amanda introduced me to the children and teachers (none of whom are qualified! but very nice all the same). The kids were all having nap time but some of them sneakily woke up and waved to me! i fell inlove with every single one of them straight away! they are absolutely adorable! The schools were like nothing i'd seen. made out of old tin craters and in the middle of townships where chickens just wonder around randomly! but they're doing their best with what they have. and the children dont know any different. to them it's a luxury to be able to come there. (although they dont always act like it and can be very naughty!)
When we got back we met all of the other volunteers who all welcomed me so nicely. I was so knackered as hadn't slept on the flight at all but was trying to make basic chit chat! Think they all understood though. I got put into project straight after lunch which was a bit of a nightmare... the nursury teacher was off so sofia (the older kid's teacher) had to be in there and every time she left us with the older kids they'd go awile and do their own thing. eventually me and hailey just gave up and let them get on with it!
Went to sleep at 7 that night as was that tired!!
