We'd heard about the luxury coaches they have over here and we were about to experience one on a 20 hour trip from BA to Bariloche, the Lakes District.
We booked a super cama where the seat turns into a fully flat bed. It was like Business Class with non stop movies, a steward who brought us a tray with out dinner, big comfy seats, pillow and blankie and as much champers, whisky and wine that you wanted. Nice!
Bariloche was a medium-sized town with more chocolate shops than you can poke a stick at. With Easter that week, it was chocolate mayhem. But it was the Patagonian Lamb that Gav was after and it was to become a Lamb-fest for the rest of our trip. Bariloche didn't provide the peace and quiet we craved after noisy BA so we booked a 2 night horse trek with Carol Jones.
There could never be a better all-round horse trek in the world, i don't think. Carol, a true gaucho woman, took us through incredible back country that we would never have seen if we'd stuck to the roads and the lakes. There were no helmets to wear, no safety talks, just jump on. The horses took us up steep shale faces and down precipitous mountains without faltering (even under Gav's weight!). We chose our tent site carefully each night but never got rid of the hard bits that kept us awake half the night. Carol made our dinner over a campfire; shards of beef, stew, potatoes and billy tea. The riding was challenging and never boring even tho we were in the saddle for 6 hours a day and we saw llamas, armadillos and eagles. We didn't want to go back to busy Bariloche but it was probably a good thing to have a comfy bed because we couldn't really walk for a few days after!
