Cape Town, South Africa
Hi its a bit hard to get internet access or resize photos atm, rest easy we're having a great time, but i thought we'd just upload a few quotes that i think give a good feel for some of the stuff we're experiencing (some of the funnier group quotes are....not really fit for public viewing ;) )
Flight steward on the 11-hour (!) plane trip on seeing our t-shirts: "Please don't take my people's culture as a tourist attraction."
Our group after stepping outside Cape Town International: "This don't feel like africa, could be london/birmingham" --->>>>Two Minutes Later, on the taxi trip past the townships and table mountain: "....................."
Xhosa man (local "black" ethnicity) on reconciliation with whites after the end of apartheid: "We try and we TRY to make the rainbow nation, we really do, but they just dont meet us 50/50"
Bishop in a Born-again Christian Church (the ones with tons of singing and calling out, a sermon on the market collapse and investing in the spirit > the flesh: "hmm, I'm not hearing so many 'amen brother's now! :D It's the truth isn't it, 99% of prayers are about MONEY, but when you bring up money matters in church........."
Teachers at a newly opened (and very shiny) primary school in the middle of a district with 60% unemployment (!): [1]"I always say school is an EXTENSION of home, and what they deal with at home, with drug abusing mothers and absent fathers, is REFLECTED when they come to school. I try and and call a parents evening, but the only ones who come are the parents of the children who are doing well, and even that is only 5 out of 29" [2] "We do the best we can in 6 hours, but at the end of the day they go back to their communities, and on the monday morning they've lost so much again, they only come to school for the two meals we provide, which are the only ones they get"
--There's a lot more that other people will be able to share, and the thing is you cant get across the best part which is the way they speak, when I put in CAPITALS they're going crazy with their hands and emphasizing. But you see how ready people are to talk, and they've got a lot of issues to get off their chest.----
